Questioning Authority Since 1955 — An Archive of Activism, History, and Independent Thought

The introduction to the Nikki Craft Archival Project — fifty years of primary documents from the work of the radical feminist activist, writer, and archivist Nikki Craft, published complete rather than in summary. Court filings, leaflets, newspapers, press releases, correspondence, arrest records, magazine pages, and the letters written by those who opposed her are reproduced entire, in the form they were written.

The introduction sets out the method behind the collection. For fifty years Craft’s instrument was the leaflet, chosen because no editor, newspaper, or encyclopedia stands between a page and the person holding it — the reason the Kitty Genovese Women’s Project printed and distributed 25,000 newspapers across Dallas rather than issuing a statement, and the reason an objection about a single editor was addressed to an entire leadership council. This archive continues that method in a medium that does not degrade.

It also states what the collection is for. The documents are not preserved because they are old. Lee Baxandall’s 1989 letter attacking Craft is here because a woman reporting abuse inside an institution today will encounter the same letter and will be better able to survive it having seen one before; the Wikipedia material is here because the mechanism that emptied one biography empties others. The work has two halves — taking apart the false account and rebuilding the true one — and documents showing how an erasure was performed sit beside the documents that were erased. The introduction discloses that parts of the archive were built with artificial intelligence, and that one family of documents within it exists because an AI system fabricated Craft’s biography outright while displaying her genuine photographs beneath the fabrication. It records that some material was removed by platforms and that the removal methods are themselves documented in the collection — Craft has been repeatedly censored on Facebook since 2016 over her positions on sex and gender, and hundreds of items record what was taken down, how each removal was justified, and the graphic work that prompted it. It ends with a pointer to the subject index maintained at nikkicraft.com and to the live Internet Archive listing, and closes with a signed note from Craft. Part of the Nikki Craft Archival Project.
